What is the ideal oral health routine?

From an early age, we’re told to brush and floss daily until it becomes an automatic part of our routine. The question is - is that enough to maintain strong, healthy teeth and gums? Let’s take a look at what the ideal oral health routine looks like for good dental hygiene.

Brushing daily

There are no ifs, buts, maybes or any alternatives that can replace the importance of brushing your teeth daily! Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste to help prevent cavities and brush for at least two minutes, twice a day. Brush in small, circular motions rather than sawing back and forth, spending time on all sides and the chewing surface of the tooth. Clean your tongue

The tongue often gets overlooked, but it’s important to remember that bacteria can also live on the surface of your tongue. Apply a tiny bit of toothpaste on your toothbrush and gently brush your tongue in a circular motion. You can also use a tongue scraper if you’d like, but a toothbrush will do the trick.

Flossing your teeth

When flossing, follow the natural curve of your teeth and be gentle enough to avoid damaging your gums. For hard-to-reach areas, try a floss pick or a water flosser for a deeper clean. Ideally, you should be flossing once a day and after you’ve eaten especially sticky or chewy foods.

Eat a healthy diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is good for your overall wellbeing, including the health of your teeth and gums! Limit your intake of sugary and starchy foods which increases the amount of plaque and opt for fresh vegetables and fruits. Foods that are great for your teeth include:

  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Almonds
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Nuts and seeds

Visit your dentist at least twice a year
