Oral Exams, also known as dental exams are common treatments that we recommend every 6 months to a year. These exams are important for your overall oral health. Some of the things the dentist will look for during this process are cavities, teeth positioning and damaged, missing or decayed teeth.
We start off with a visual inspection and ask you about your medical history. It is important for us to examine your neck area for inflammation, since this could indicate health problems such as oral cancer. We go through a thorough process because we want you to be at your healthiest while making sure nothing is missed. Oral exam questions will be more detailed the first time around because we want to know you as a patient.
Your dentist may request X-Rays depending on the analysis we do. The images gathered help us by showing if you have fractures, impacted wisdom teeth, decay under the gum line, cavities under existing fillings or bone loss caused by gum disease.
We will check your tongue, palate and the floor of your mouth to make sure you are clear of inflammation and bleeding
A dental exam typically takes an hour. You may be asked to come back so we can check the healing and progress of certain treatments. Your dentist recommends examinations for children starting at 12 months old. If you no longer have natural teeth it is still important to consult the dentist for maintaining your oral health and checking if you need replacement teeth.
We might need to do a dental impression. What is a dental impression, you ask? It is a process where we create a replica of your teeth and oral tissue. We perform this service to evaluate your bite, make a mouthguard or bleaching trays. These custom fitted mouth guards last longer than over the counter products. Dental impressions are custom fit to your teeth. A horseshoe shaped tray with a soft gelatine like material gets placed over your upper/lower teeth. We may also need to record and evaluate your bite therefore will ask you to clamp your mouth down on a soft material.
