Wisdom teeth are your third molars located in the back of your mouth. You usually get these teeth in your late teens or early 20s however not everyone gets all their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth do not necessarily make you wise!
If you do have wisdom teeth coming in, feel pain and discomfort from your growing teeth, we want to help you. We provide wisdom tooth extraction so you can avoid further issues with them and prevent this pain from happening in the first place. The following problems are reasons it is important to get your wisdom teeth out.
1. Your mouth may be too small for your wisdom teeth and they will be unable to break through your gums 2. Wisdom teeth may only break part way through your gums causing a flap of gum tissue growth over these teeth where germs and food get trapped and create swollen, red and painful gums causing an infection 3.Your wisdom teeth may not break through your gums at all occurring in an infection, damage to other bone and teeth or a cyst 4. Wisdom teeth can come in at an inconveniently awkward angle with the top tooth facing backward, forward or sideways
We make the extraction process as quick and painless as possible.
Removal of your wisdom teeth can be done under local freezing or with one of our sedation options, oral sedation or IV sedation. Our dental professionals at Cambrian Dental are extremely careful not to damage the surrounding teeth or bone when removing your wisdom teeth. Immediately after the procedure a small piece of sterilized gauze is placed over the area for about 15-20 minutes to prevent bleeding.
After your extraction it is imperative to avoid brushing your teeth for 24 hours.
On the second day we want you to start gently brushing around the extractions and continue this for the rest of the time. You should not drive, drink alcohol or operate machinery after your oral surgery so we tell you to make sure someone is there for you before and after the surgery. All bleeding should stop after 24 hours but if this continues come see us.
Periodically bite gently on the gauze and change it every time it becomes blood soaked. 1. Prop your head up with pillows 2. Place an ice pack on the outside of your cheek during the first 24 hours for 15-20 minutes at a time 3. Use moist heat for the following 2-3 days 4. Avoid sucking on a straw as this can loosen blood clotting and delay healing 5. Eat soft foods 6. Stay away from touching or rubbing the area 7. Avoid strenuous activity such as exercise 8. After a 24-hour period, rinse with warm salt water several times a day
We suggest you get your wisdom teeth taken out in your late teens or early 20s as this stage in life allows for easier removal and recovery.
Most problems with wisdom teeth happen between 15-25 years of age. To have the best oral health possible and avoid any deeply negative issues that could arise in the future, we offer these procedures for your dental comfort.
