Everything You Need to Know About Dental Surgery

May 29, 2019

Brushing and flossing your teeth and gums, along with visiting the dentist regularly, will help you stay away from dental issues. What happens when a serious problem occurs? You might need dental surgery to correct severely fragile or broken teeth or problems with your tooth’s structure. Your dentist will determine the appropriate type of surgery depending on your individual situation.

If you are concerned about something going on with your teeth, it is best to tell your dentist so the problem can be fixed.

What is dental surgery?

A medical procedure involving modification of your teeth, gums and/or jaw bones.

Why do I need dental surgery?

Some situations where dental surgery may be required are:

  • Severely broken or fragile teeth
  • Impacted teeth (common wisdom teeth)
  • Exaggerated root morphology (could include overly long or curved roots)
  • Root tip removal
  • Inelastic or dense bone tissue around the tooth

Can my dentist perform the surgical procedure himself/herself?
Your dentist might be able to complete your dental surgery but it depends on your particular situation. Each type of surgical procedure requires varying pre-requisites. If your dentist is unable to do the surgery, you will be referred to a specialist.

What is a remedy for severely broken teeth?
Your dentist might remove bone from the parts surrounding your broken tooth. Once this removal is complete, the dentist can extract your tooth.

What is the treatment for fragile teeth?

Your tooth can be loosened and removed using less force by removing some of the bone encasing the root of the tooth.

How does your dentist fix impacted teeth?

An incision will be made to remove the tooth. Once the tooth has been successfully incised, it will be stitched back up.

What does your dentist do in the case of exaggerated root morphology?

Having curved roots may require your dentist to pull the attached teeth. A remedy for abnormally long roots is to remove some of the bone surrounding the root and then possibly extract the tooth attached to the problem root. Your dentist will explain the process should this type of issue be of concern.

How does your dentist deal with root tip removal?

The dentist can perform varying procedures based on the position of the root’s tip. If the tip is close to the surface a minor incision can be made to flick the tooth out. If the tip remains encased in the bone then a bone removal and tissue flap may be needed. What is a tissue flap? A kind of dental surgery where tissue is lifted from one site and put into another section, keeping the blood supply intact.

What happens at the dentist when you are treated for inelastic or dense bone tissue?

You will likely have bone tissue removed.

Once your dental surgery is complete, how do you recover?

As with any type of surgery, you will need to take time to let your surgical area heal. Get plenty of rest and avoid any heavy lifting. Start off eating soft foods and gradually build your way up to eating solid foods. Your dentist will tell you if medications are required and provide any necessary prescription. You will be provided with a takeaway sheet listing the best way to heal after surgery.
